The acetaldehyde condensation method involves the condensation of two molecules of ethanol to produce butyraldehyde, followed by dehydration to produce crotonaldehyde (crotonaldehyde), then hydrogenated to obtain n-butanal; Hydrogenation of n-butanal to obtain n-butanol; If dehydrated through condensation, 2-ethylhexenal is generated, which is further hydrogenated to obtain the final product 2-ethylhexanol.

Alternatively, high-pressure carbonylation synthesis can be used to synthesize n-butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde using propylene, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen as raw materials and cobalt tetracarbonyl hydride as a catalyst. N-Butyraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde undergo hydrogenation reactions using copper or nickel as catalysts.
N-Butyraldehyde is hydrogenated in gas or solid phase to produce n-butanol; After initial distillation, n-butanol is purified in a two tower distillation system.
Using sodium hydroxide as a catalyst, n-butanol is condensed and dehydrated to produce 2-ethylhexenal. 2-Ethylhexenal is hydrogenated in the presence of a nickel catalyst at a certain temperature and pressure to produce iso-2-ethylhexanol.
